Inca Maps: Weave

DSC_0827_openWith-Edit-2.jpg

A very promising debut single Weave’ by London based quartet ‘Inca Maps’ is the perfect summer accompaniment. Synth poppish but with a touch of R&B, Matt Tilling’s complete-spectrum vocals magnificently surf along the wavy brilliance of synthesisers, guitars and intricate percussion created by Leo Morgan on guitars & synthesisers, Tim Horne on bass & synthesisers, and Toby Archer on drums.
‘Weave’ will make you want to break the rules a little and be foolish in a good way. Have fun:

Lovelace: Lands

DSC_0324_DxO-2

Rebecca Whitbread, who goes by the moniker ‘Lovelace’, has released her debut album Lands on July 29th. The album details a period in Lovelace’s life, which took her through many contrasting landscapes, both in literal and metaphorical terms. Electronic keyboard riffs, a gentle and almost lilting drum beat and a soothing yet crystal clear voice give the album an overall disconnected, dreamy and nostalgic vibe. This album is very autobiographical in the sense that it starts with a track called B. Man, which seems to be a reference to an incident some years ago when Lovelace bought a ticket for the Burning Man festival on a whim and boarded a plane without knowing anyone. Additionally, it references various significant friends, lovers and epiphanies that have shaped the musical journey that she has undertaken to follow her heart. These varied experiences give the album a very honest and relatable albeit experimental feeling which seems to work very well as a consequence of the juxtaposition with the almost disconnected vibe mentioned above. Lovelace now spends her time shuttling between my home city Berlin and London, with occasional trips to her hometown in Devon. She plays in a 5 member band piece band consisting of herself, Rebecca Whitbread, on Guitar and lead vocals, Hannah Murphy and Ruth Corey on backing vocals, Petter Grevelius on bass and Bernie Gardner on drums. A sample of their labor of love:

Said the Ghost : Inhale Day EP

‘Inhale Day’, the first part of a two part EP project called ‘Breathe Life’ by ‘Said the Ghost’ (the solo project of Brighton based Jamie Lees), just came out on Summer Solstice. The second part of this grand production will be out on Winter Solstice, and that should literally cover the long and short of it ;). As for Inhale Day, it is a celebration of new beginnings with its shoegazy meditative guitar riffs, soulful singing and a distinctive fusion-hymnlike vibe which submerges your mind and unleashes splashes positive energy in your limbic system. What is clearly impressive is Jamie’s musical and vocal prowess. For starters, his soothing yet versatile voice will be at home in musical styles as diverse as Indian and Irish. To top it off, the eclectic sound that draws some comparisons to Everything Everything and Dutch Uncles, Grizzly Bear, Field Music, White Denim, War on Drugs, St.Vincent, even Stevie Wonder at times, is something that Jamie and Nick Lewis (Mastering) should be very very proud of. We can’t recommend this enough and please purchase this EP from the band camp links below and encourage Jamie for an even more stupendous return with the second part ‘Exhale Night’ later this year. Get ready to get immersed:

Rehearsed Living: ‘Stitch in Time’ and ‘To you I dare’ and ‘Props’

DSC_0245

Sheffield based Indie band ‘Rehearsed Living’ have recently released a few quality tracks recently which are definite must haves in any music collection. The melancholic ‘Stitch in Time’ envelopes you with its restrained strumming, beautiful work on the percussion and evocative vocals. To you I dare, is a very interesting track which starts with an upbeat tempo and almost happy melody but the vocals are anything but upbeat. It very successfully creates the feeling of sarcasm, challenge or even mockery to an extent and that really fits with the title of the track I suppose. Props, which is the most recent of the tracks that these guys have come out with, incorporates a classic rock almost ‘ballad’ish start but then metamorphoses into a shoegazy tempo and the vocals are really smooth and complement it greatly or prop it up to brilliance. all their songs are downloadable from their soundcloud page which can be accessed using the links provided here:

Sleepless Inn: The Rainbow Room and others

DSC_0134cpy2

The smooth enchantment of Laura Finlay’s vocals set against a backdrop of casually intense electro-pop beats by Eddie Logix, add some very promising songwriting skills to the mix and you have the captivating debut album ‘The Rainbow Room’, by Detroit based Sleepless Inn. Some samples from the debut album:

They have recently also released an evocatively trippy single called ‘Escalators’. Very energetic rhythm around this one coupled with an overall feeling of ‘insubstantiality’, if that is a word! Sort of like a soundtrack to what Kundera must’ve been thinking when he coined the title ‘The unbearable lightness of being’! Not the best thought when travelling on an escalator though :):

Starar: Summit (New EP)

photo (10)

London based sibling duo Starar have recently released two scorchers for tracks for their EP titled Summit. Whether it is the classy but subtle interplay between the saxophone and the ‘ever-so-smooth’ vocals on the title track or the incorporation of drip/flow sounds of non-stagnant water into a Dire-Straits meet Richard Marx sort of mood experienced on ‘For the Water’, there is much to cherish here:

Alex Autajon – Don’t be Shy

photo (6)

17 year old Frenchman, Alex Autajon, makes music well beyond his years. Each beat is so meticulously placed, each fade, each build up so perfect, this electronic-bassy downtempo blends melancholic synths, jarring piano and soothing basslines to submerge you into a lull only to bring in that sudden drop from time to time which is like waking up from a suspended state under the dreamy waters of your bathtub to the sounds of it suddenly gushing down the drain because life or automated drainage got in the way. Some fresh, clean fun then:

Anthony Craig: A Disclosure

DSC_0652

Some emotional electro-trip-pop from UK based producer/singer/songwriter Anthony Craig comprises the majority of his debut album ‘A Disclosure’. Clearly very heartfully rendered, the vocals perfectly suit the mood of the album, but it is the blues and folks influences in the background which mix so well with the semi soft-dub vibe, that give this album a very layered sound and this creates very unique and engaging experience. Please listen to a few samples below:
