PLGRMS: Pieces

DSC_0359-1-2

Every once in a while there comes a song that reminds me of that wonderful quote from ‘A Clockwork Orange’ while the protagonist listened to Beethoven’s Ninth: ‘Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now‘. I can’t phrase my praise for this layered beauty of a track from PLGRMS any better, so just listen to it and then listen to it again and again and again:

There is also a video for this track, which I unfortunately can’t access from Germany due to it being blocked by one of the most controversial authorities here ‘GEMA’. A link to the track, should you be located anywhere other than the fatherland:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbTHbErVWV4

A bit of info about the band: PLGRMS is a duo comprised of the talented Australian born, London-based singer-songwriter Toma Banjanin and accomplished Sydney songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Bowden. The track (shared above) is co-written and produced by Jimmy Lyell – one half of internationally-renowned electronic duo Flight Facilities – and also features The Preatures’ Luke Davison on drums.

Alex Autajon – Don’t be Shy

photo (6)

17 year old Frenchman, Alex Autajon, makes music well beyond his years. Each beat is so meticulously placed, each fade, each build up so perfect, this electronic-bassy downtempo blends melancholic synths, jarring piano and soothing basslines to submerge you into a lull only to bring in that sudden drop from time to time which is like waking up from a suspended state under the dreamy waters of your bathtub to the sounds of it suddenly gushing down the drain because life or automated drainage got in the way. Some fresh, clean fun then:

Maxwell Demon: Tears

tears2

New York based self styled musician ‘Maxwell Demon’, who we featured a couple of times last year has come up with the perfect combination of melody and distortion in his latest track called ‘Tears’. With great lyrics and a simple yet mesmerising drum beat to boot, this is just what the doctor ordered to cuddle up under your blanket and listen on repeat for this unforgiving winter’s day:

This song, like most of the others posted by Maxwell are legitimately downloadable for free via soundcloud. So feast your ears and spread the word!

SoDown…. But in a good way ;)!

dubster

One of the most important pieces of music for this year! It signifies hope, change, world domination and more importantly ‘the spirit of experimentation’. SoDown’s teaser track for their soon to be released EP ‘A Sudden and Drastic Change’, is our final track for 2012! Hope you all have a kickass celebration and a great new year! Mix some chemicals, fly some sparks, effect some reactions, and drink lots of beer! In the meantime, just push play:

The band is from Boulder, USA and can be followed on facebook, in case you would like more soundbytes like the one posted above: https://www.facebook.com/sodownbassmusic

The Blac Swan

So, how about some funky disco vibes then? Swim and Fly on the dance floor to the tunes of this week’s featured band : ‘The Blac Swan’ from NY, USA. According to their soundcloud description, ‘They make modern classics’. Don’t go in expecting Ludwig Van and you won’t be disappointed would be my 2 cents.

A little more detail about them: It’s been about 2 years since they started out. Until now they’d been doing remixes and djing while working on their original songs, and they now have their debut EP released. It’s title is We Flyin’. As we are in the mood for equality today (as some feisty Czech woman who was crowned Miss Earth today might want for the world), we would include our favourite original and favourite remix from the bunch:

The Blac Swan have achieved considerable success in a short while; We Flyin’ had been ranked #1 on Nu Disco Release Chart for 1 week and #14 on overall Beatport’s album Release Chart. If you like what you hear head over to their soundcloud page: http://soundcloud.com/theblacswan and you can buy their tracks on Beatport. Enjoy the funky journey!

Canned Applause : Run Oh My Heart

Image

This week’s feature is for a band called Canned Applause from Germany. It started as a 4 member band somewhere between Hamburg and Berlin, but at the moment is a solo project based out of Jena. The ‘einzel’ band member is Wieland Mikolajczyk. He describes canned applause as a journey with a quest for Polyphony and Harmony.

As for the music, what I heard sounds very promising, especially the new track ‘Run Oh My Heart’, which has a strong bass, catchy vibe, easy vocals, great lyrics and a lilting melody:

More songs are available at the band’s soundcloud page or on their website. Additionally, you can follow the band on facebook. All the songs are legitimately downloadable for no extra cost except your time and love. As with all matters of the heart: The possibilities are endless, hic!

Det mekaniska undret: Olika Sidor Av Staden, Sockerbruket

Swedish musician Andreas Österberg who goes by the name of Det mekaniska undret, came up with the novel and unexplored question : What do people listen to when they travel by public transport?. This was the inspiration for him to create a music album based on the route covered by Tram 11 in his city Gothenburg, which has the most extensive tram network in Scandinavia. The concept is great and the execution even better. Each station on the track gets a sing and some also get a video. As is with every city, every neighbourhood or every phase of the journey has a distinctive mood or flavor which has been beautifully captured by Andreas’s music. I cannot follow the vocals, as I don’t understand Swedish, but if you ever needed an example of music being free from the barriers of language, this is your album A sample of the music on offer in the album:

The whole video-playlist for the album is there on youtube and can be viewed by clicking:

The whole album is there for listening on soundcloud and the videos/music/artwork can all be downloaded legit for free from: http://23seconds.org/063.htm

All this happened a year ago, but more recently Andreas has come up with a shoegazy track called Sockerbruket. This is strikingly different from his earlier work and kicks serious arse. It starts off slowly with a delayed oscillating buildup and then the drums kick in at the perfect instant followed by the bare essential distorted vocal sounds. This then leads us to the part where the flangey guitar/high-pitched piano comes in and as a final addition to complete this flavorsome recipe, we have the wonderful garnishing of the keyboards. I especially liked the part where after the drop the song changes texture and then ends with a wonderful screechy sound. Enough said, listen and enjoy:

4 Cities : Ocean

Another band we featured last month, 4 Cities has come up with a brand new track called Ocean! The track has a great tune and the vocals deserve a special mention on this one! I can’t put my finger on the style but it really is a blend of many. There are passing similarities between this song and some of the works of Bowie/Joy Division/The Cure but then it metamorphoses regularly to something else. Anyhow, it is an accomplished piece of work and 4 Cities deserve a pat on their backs for following up the earlier super singles ‘Highway’ and ‘Quiet Bullets’ with this masterpiece!

The song:

If you like what you hear, remember that you can register on the 4 Cities website and download all their work for free.

Cheers and for those of you in Germany, wish you a very Happy Reunification day for tomorrow!
