Lovelace: Lands

DSC_0324_DxO-2

Rebecca Whitbread, who goes by the moniker ‘Lovelace’, has released her debut album Lands on July 29th. The album details a period in Lovelace‚Äôs life, which took her through many contrasting landscapes, both in literal and metaphorical terms. Electronic keyboard riffs, a gentle and almost lilting drum beat and a soothing yet crystal clear voice give the album an overall disconnected, dreamy and nostalgic vibe. This album is very autobiographical in the sense that it starts with a track called B. Man, which seems to be a reference to an incident some years ago when Lovelace bought a ticket for the Burning Man festival on a whim and boarded a plane without knowing anyone. Additionally, it references various significant friends, lovers and epiphanies that have shaped the musical journey that she has undertaken to follow her heart. These varied experiences give the album a very honest and relatable albeit experimental feeling which seems to work very well as a consequence of the juxtaposition with the almost disconnected vibe mentioned above. Lovelace now spends her time shuttling between my home city Berlin and London, with occasional trips to her hometown in Devon. She plays in a 5 member band piece band consisting of herself, Rebecca Whitbread, on Guitar and lead vocals, Hannah Murphy and Ruth Corey on backing vocals, Petter Grevelius on bass and Bernie Gardner on drums.
